Rockford University kicks-off the 2019-2020 academic year with the President's Opening Convocation and the annual Plunge service event

Rockford University officially begins its 2019-2020 academic year when classes start on Wednesday, August 21.

Rockford, IL (08/21/2019) — Rockford University officially begins its 2019-2020 academic year when classes start on Wednesday, August 21. The University looks forward to welcoming returning undergraduate and graduate students to campus. On Friday, August 23, at 12 p.m., Maddox Theatre, Clark Arts Center, President Eric W. Fulcomer, Ph.D., will preside over President's Opening Convocation. Held each year since 1851, the opening convocation includes a faculty procession in full academic regalia and features remarks from Dr. Fulcomer. Inspired by a summer trip with his daughter to New York City, "More than Gossip" will highlight a recent renewed interest in the hallmark CW Network TV show, Gossip Girl, as a backdrop to chronicle the lives of RU Alumni as motivation for students as they approach the academic year.

Following the President's Opening Convocation will be the annual Plunge community service event for new students, happening on Saturday, August 24 from 8:30 - 12 p.m., at locations throughout the city. A long-standing annual tradition, the Plunge will include around 150 members of the campus community who work on various projects that help them learn more about the Rockford Community and forge new relationships with fellow classmates, faculty and staff. Sites include: Beyer Stadium, Mendelssohn Performing Arts, Severson Dells, Rockford Rescue Mission Thrift Shop, Discovery Center, Northern Illinois Food Bank, and on the Rockford University campus.

All Forums are open to the public and, with the exception of Performing Arts events, are free of charge. Lectures and performances will take place on the Rockford University campus, 5050 East State Street, Rockford. Tickets are required and can be obtained at the Clark Arts Center Box Office during regular hours of operation- Monday through Friday, 1- 5 p.m., as well as one hour before event at location of event.
